How Hays CAD's Informal Process Works
Key difference: if the appraiser cannot reach you before your formal hearing date, the informal review happens the same day as the formal hearing, immediately before the ARB panel meets.
When you file, you can request an informal conference, and “time permitting,” a Hays CAD appraiser will contact you via email. Response times vary from a few days to a few months. If a settlement is reached informally, your formal hearing is cancelled.
Formal ARB hearings are conducted on-site in Kyle or via Zoom videoconference. Zoom links are emailed from noreply@hayscad.com — check spam folders carefully. Hearings by written affidavit (Form 50-283) are also available.

Why Hays County Is Favorable for Protesters
Hays County offers what may be the most favorable protest environment in Central Texas. The numbers speak for themselves:
The county's rapid growth creates natural opportunities for protest. Mass appraisal systems that don't inspect individual homes generate assessment disparities between similar properties — making the unequal appraisal argument particularly strong in Hays County. If your neighbor's similar home is appraised for significantly less than yours, that's powerful evidence.
Hays County's rising tax rates compound the importance of protesting. Every dollar of appraised value reduction produces meaningful tax savings. Learn more about building your evidence in our complete evidence guide, and see why doing it yourself saves more.
